Often described as the "right hand" of the party's leadership, KC Venugopal acts as the main link between the Congress high command, comprising party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, and several state units. Most internal party decisions run through his office, as he is responsible for supervising administrative tasks and managing the appointment of significant party positions.

Previously, he served as the Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation from 2012 to 2014 and as the Union Minister of State for Power from 2011 to 2012.

He is also a sitting Lok Sabha MP from Alappuzha in Kerala, a constituency he holds with consistent margins, which makes him a credible figure in state politics, not merely a central leader parachuted in from Delhi.

According to party sources, 53 of the 63 Congress MLAs shared their preferences with the party observers, while 10 legislators left the decision entirely to the Congress high command. Out of those who expressed an opinion, 43 MLAs reportedly supported KC Venugopal for the Chief Minister's role.

Forty-three out of the MLAs expressed a preference. That is not a narrow lead. That is a significant signal, and the Congress high command reads signals like this very carefully before making a formal announcement.

Rahul Gandhi is expected to attend Monday's swearing-in ceremony, with the decision to be finalised at the earliest and the oath ceremony expected imminently.

Why Venugopal's Path to the CM Post Is Not Entirely Straightforward

Here is the complication that observers keep raising, and it is a real one.

As the sitting MP from Alappuzha and one of Congress's most important national office-bearers, the party leadership may be reluctant to lose him from the Lok Sabha. Moreover, if Venugopal is chosen as Chief Minister, he would have to enter the Kerala Assembly within six months, requiring a sitting MLA to vacate a seat and triggering two bypolls.

Bypolls create political risk. They can be won or lost, and a new government holding a bypoll shortly after taking office is never a comfortable position. The Congress will have factored this in.

Venugopal's arguments for the post include his intervention in bringing dissident CPI(M) leaders on board during the election campaign, a factor widely credited with denting the Left's vote in key constituencies. He has also argued that the Chief Minister will not be decided by media speculation or individual ambition, but through a considered evaluation of leadership qualities.

That is a pointed message, delivered quietly. He is telling rivals not to use the press to pressure the high command, while simultaneously making his own case through the party's internal channels.

What a Venugopal-Led Kerala Government Would Actually Look Like

Venugopal is not an ideologue in the traditional sense. He is an organiser. A consensus builder. The kind of leader whose instinct is to manage competing interests rather than bulldoze through them.

All three frontrunners, Venugopal, VD Satheesan, and Ramesh Chennithala, are disciples of the late former Kerala CM and Congress veteran Karunakaran, which gives the succession a sense of continuity within a specific political tradition.

A Venugopal government would likely lean into what the Congress organisationally knows how to do well in Kerala, which is coalition management, welfare delivery, and a development-first posture that contrasts with what the LDF was accused of in its final years. Corruption allegations against the outgoing government were a major factor in the UDF's return, and any new administration will be expected to set a visible tone of accountability early.

There is something quietly significant about a man who spent years making other people's governments work, now standing at the threshold of making one of his own.
