House of the Dragon Season 3 Premiere Recap: The Battle of the Gullet Has Arrived and It Already Costs Someone Everything

The Season 3 Premiere Opens in the Vale: Rhaena and Sheepstealer

The season begins not with battle, but with stillness. Rhaena Targaryen stands near Sheepstealer, the wild dragon she had been tracking for what felt like forever, in the Vale. She approaches slowly. "Calm," she says in High Valyrian. The dragon, in a moment that carries genuine weight after so many failed attempts in Season 2, lowers itself and lets her climb up. A new rider is confirmed. A small victory before everything goes sideways.

Alicent's Plan Begins to Collapse: Aegon Is Missing, Aemond Is Sitting on the Throne

Back in King's Landing, Alicent returns from her secret meeting with Rhaenyra only to find that Aegon has disappeared and Prince Aemond has seated himself on the Iron Throne, declaring himself in charge. He informs her he will not be flying to Harrenhal after all. Any remaining hope she had of engineering a bloodless resolution evaporates in that moment.

He also reports that Lord Ormund Hightower is marching toward the city with an army, including Daeron and Daeron's dragon. And crucially, the Blacks' sea blockade is about to be challenged by a massive Triarchy fleet led by Tyland Lannister and Sharako Lohar.

The Death That Changes Everything: Jacaerys Velaryon Falls at the Gullet

This is the moment the premiere has been building toward since its opening frames. As the Triarchy fleet closes in on the Narrow Sea, Rhaenyra prepares to fly out herself and meet it with dragonfire. Jacaerys (Harry Collett), her eldest surviving son, refuses to allow it. He orders the Queensguard to keep Rhaenyra inside Dragonstone and takes her place, encouraging Baela Targaryen to join him. Jace rides Vermax into the fight. Baela follows on Moondancer.

Initially, the dragons give the Blacks the upper hand. But the battle turns. And when it does, Jacaerys is killed. His body sinks to the bottom of the Narrow Sea. A member of Team Green is also reported dead.

The premiere ends not with triumph but with loss. As TVLine noted, it is precisely the kind of heroism this show does best: self-sacrificing, futile in one sense, essential in another, and just a little too late to save anything. The Riverlands and Harrenhal: Daemon Wins, Then Waits

In the Riverlands, Daemon's forces defeat the Lannister men. Jason Lannister is beheaded by new cast member Tommy Flanagan's character, Ser Roderick Dustin. Back at Harrenhal, the three dragonseeds are growing restless and paranoid, catching glimpses of a man with antlers in the woods before Alys Rivers appears to inform them they are missing the battle entirely.

What Season 3 Is Setting Up

With the Dance of the Dragons now fully under way, the season premiere has done its structural work: established the new riders, confirmed the first major battle, killed someone whose death will ripple outward, and reset the chess board. The Rotten Tomatoes score of 95% signals that critics believe the series has found its footing again after a slower second season.

Season 3, filmed between March and October 2025, covers material from George R.R. Martin's Fire and Blood. Showrunner Ryan Condal is now the sole creative lead after Martin stepped away from the series following creative differences.
